WHAT IS COMMUNITY AND APPLIED THEATRE / DANCE THEATRE?

Community can be defined by geography or it can be defined by class, religion, gender, or politics; there are now even virtual communities. We define ourselves by our sense of community where we feel we belong, but we are also defined by the communities people see us belonging to. Different communities have different attitudes, to life, to culture, to art and to the world around them. How do we meet these communities, how do we share experiences, how do we help each other, how do we learn and progress, how do we understand ourselves and our situation?

That's what we look at with applied theatre and dance theatre. We use the tools of theatre, drama and dance and apply them not just in a theatre or dance building but outside, with these different communities, seeing what there is to learn and to appreciate. Intervening at times in order to help specific people understand a very specific problem or simply sharing ideas and experiences. This can be done with performances or in workshops or the many different ways that theatre and dance theatre work.
